In 1986 Bernd Klüser, a veteran German gallerist, decided to bring together thirty international artists, main exponents of the most important movements in contemporary art – Pop, Minimalism, Arte Povera, the Italian Trans-avant-garde, Fluxus etc – to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Joseph Beuys (Krefeld 1921-Düsseldorf 1986) and pay a well-deserved homage to one of the most outstanding and influential artists of the second half 20th’ century.
Beuys’ unexpected death shortly after converted this project from a celebration act into a posthumous homage for this brilliant artist.
The graphic series “For Joseph Beuys” – a suite bringing together his friends’ and collaborator’s works like Cindy Sherman, Andy Warhol, Christiansen, Nam June Paik and Mimmo Paladino – was born. This portfolio became the ideal way to approach by graphic art to the art scene of the last years as well to the memory of this great sculptor, performer, shaman and drawer, whose complex creative work supported the use of serial art. For Beuys the importance of serialization was to be found in its faculty for multiplying artwork allowing to be distributed to a larger public and at lower prices.
